Messaging In The Enterprise
“What we’ve found is that enterprise IM is essentially the GenX replacement for email,” says Mark Levitt, program VP for the Collaborative Computing And The Enterprise Workplace group at IDC. “They do email, but they prefer IM.” And, Levitt adds, “many more-experienced workers also use text messaging.”

Suppliers Say BlackBerry Archiving Is Advancing
Email archiving is a key IT responsibility these days, thanks to increased use of data in corporate litigation. Now, instant messages (IMs) from corporate BlackBerries are getting the same scrutiny. And more suppliers are looking to help companies make sure they’re covered. “Many IT managers have not been able to monitor or archive workers’ text messages, leaving financial institutions and other organizations vulnerable to compliance issues and fines, as well as loss of intellectual property,” said Don Montgomery, VP of marketing at Akonix, an IM policy management software vendor based in San Diego, in a statement.

IM-based threats still lurking
Over the last several years, the malware research community has seen the dramatic shift away from attacks sent to end users via email attachment or IMs toward greater use of compromised Web sites to distribute nefarious code – but, beware, the IM channel is still harboring plenty of threats. According to Akonix Systems, its researchers tracked some 18 new malware attacks being delivered via IM during the month of December, bringing the total volume of IM-based threats that it uncovered to 346 for the entire year of 2007.

New Windows-based ‘downloader’ malware known as Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Diehard surged to the top of Kaspersky Lab’s ‘Virus Top Twenty’ list for December because of its explosive propagation, the security firm said. Security firm Akonix Systems, which specializes in instant messaging (IM)-based defense, said it counted three new IM-based worms in December – Cargar, Etest and YMWorm – and determined that there have been a total of 346 IM-targeted malware types for 2007, down from the 406 IM malware types seen in 2006.
